I believe it being hard to define the word information in the technology field is because of the broad view in the field. But you would think of information in the technology as everything in the information's and information system's that you would know of when it comes down to asking about it due to the technology field. There is a lot to be said about information in this type of field!

I don't feel as if it is difficult to define information. Essentially, it is not difficult to define at all. The difficulty enters when someone might be overwhelmed when he or she considers that information has so many applications and uses. Information is applied and results from our interaction with the physical realm. Merely listing some of the uses requires new kinds of information.

The word information to me is knowledge taught and received. Information can be overwhelming in our day, to keep up with the massive amount that is available especially with new inventions like the internet. However, information can be as simple as a child learning the ABCs (which probably isn't that simple to the child). It goes along the line of the phrase "The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know."

Information is...processed data? It's kind of like data is to information as eggs, milk, flour, sugar, etc. are to a cake. It isn't until the ingredients are processed that they really hold any meaning to you.

Now for the answer to the second part I believe the difficulty in defining information necessitates the existence of an entire industry. The information technology industry's purpose is to produce and handle information and as such the broader and more encompassing the definition of information is the broader, more encompassing, and just flat out bigger the industry will be.

Information is simply data in a form that means something to somebody.

The information technology field exists for the very purpose of turning that data into information will can be used by the anyone and everyone. Since there is so much data and so many people that have different needs of the information contained in the data, then the field has alot of necessity.

Information is defined in various ways and can be difficult because its meaning is often not carefully considered. It can mean something different to others. In the information technology industry, I think information is data that can be processed to represent something meaningful and useful, such as information systems, software, etc.

I think information is such a hard word to define because its used so widely in almost all fields. But its basically something that you are taught and retain, it has to mean something to you. I think it is so hard to define because there is so much of it that everyone interprets it different.

Information is hard to define because there are so many different types it. It means something different for everyone. I like one of the definitions in the book. It reads that "...information is knowledge derived from data." If it gives you knowlege it is information. You can have good info., bad info., and TMI (Too much info--j/k). Most of us want good info. Those of us in the business of working in the information system field provide tools to help people obtain as good info as one could get. Some of those tools include IT, but also includes SO much more.
